Most of you know that I have taken up wood turning as a way to make a living. Turns out I am pretty good at it. To me there is nothing more exciting then to see what beauty God has hidden inside of a simple piece of wood. After getting the shape just right, I begin the long process of sanding the wood. I sand each step, from 100 grit to 4000 grit sand paper and then begin to polish and protect the wood with layer after layer of friction lacquer, so the finished pen is as smooth as glass and will last a lifetime.
I have a great web site under construction at www.dovecottagecrafts.com and thanks to an old friend in Phoenix, AZ and a new friend in Tombstone, AZ, I am launching several new lines of pens. Two of which will be limited edition, signed and numbered Tombstone gunfighter pens made from some very special historic woods.
The RINGO is made from the actual black oak tree that the famed gunfighter John Ringo's body was found in back in July of 1882 and under which he is still buried. I will be using part of the tree that was hit by lightning and broke away. The pen will include a 45 bullet casing similar to the type Ringo would have used in his colt revolver for any of his murders. The pen will include a certificate of authenticity and a leather case branded with the name RINGO. Only 1500 of this pen will be made.
To balance crime with punishment, the second pen is the SLAUGHTER. Named for famed Arizona lawman and poker player, Texas John Slaughter, whose ranch was near Tombstone. This pen will be made from mesquite wood gathered on BLM land that was part of his historic ranch. This pen will also be made with a .45 bullet casing and have a leather case with the name SLAUGHTER and his own cattle brand U lazy S branded into the leather. Also only 1500 of this pen will be made.
There will be a third pen known as the Tombstone that will be made in a variety of styles and from woods and natural materials such as deer antler and even diamond back rattlesnake skins, most will be inlaid with turquoise and come with a leather case branded with the name Tombstone and completed with bit of turquoise and silver bead work. The snake skin pens will have a strip of real rattlesnake skin sewn into the leather case.
The really exciting news is that these pens are going to be introduced for sale at the famed Tombstone Western Music Festival Nov. 3-5 2006. And will then become available for sale both online from my website and at some of the finer gift shops in Tombstone and Scottsdale, AZ.
Y'all are more than welcome to help me promote these pens. If any of you know a history buff or some one who loves the Old West, one of these pens would make a very special gift. While each pen is a unique piece of art work in itself, I am limiting the gunfighter pens to only 500 for each gunfighter. So these pens will not only last a life time, but will increase in value.
I am still finding out what the final costs of the materials will be, so I do not have a wholesale price set yet. But I do know that pens of a similar quality, without being a signed and numbered collector pen and without having any historic value, tend to retail for between $160.00 and $300.00.
I will also be placing a beautiful display of a dozen pens on consignment at quality gift shops and art galleries across the country.
